A 22-year-old Malaysian woman has been charged after attempting to internally import heroin into Australia. The woman was stopped for questioning by Australian Customs and Border Protection officers when she arrived at Sydney International Airport on a flight from Malaysia on 30 November 2011. During questioning, Customs and Border Protection officers became suspicious that the woman may have been concealing drugs internally.
The matter was then referred to the Australian Federal Police (AFP) who transferred the woman to hospital for medical examination, where the woman admitted she was concealing foreign objects internally. The woman later passed a total of 105 pellets weighing approximately 1.05 kilograms in total. Initial testing indicated the pellets contained heroin, with further testing to take place to determine the exact weight and purity.
AFP officers subsequently charged the woman with importing a marketable quantity of a border controlled drug contrary to section 307.2(1) of the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth). The woman is expected to appear in Parramatta Bail Court today. The maximum penalty for importing a marketable quantity of a border controlled drug is 25 years imprisonment and/or a $550,000 fine.
