In a significant infrastructure boost for NSW, a $300 million landfill and construction waste and recycling facility was today launched by Premier Barry O'Farrell.

Genesis Xerowaste is located at Eastern Creek in western Sydney and is the site of the former Fitzpatrick hard rock quarry. The site is owned and operated by Dial A Dump Industries, one of the state's leading waste management companies.

NSW Premier and Minister for Western Sydney Barry O'Farrell launched the facility today to more than 500 guests from the Sydney construction, building, waste management and banking and investment industries. "This is a significant investment for NSW and for Western Sydney - I welcome the jobs this project will create for the region," Mr O’Farrell said. "The facility serves an important need - it will support construction and building in Sydney for at least the next twenty years.

The landfill itself is 150 metres deep and a 12.5 million cubic metre void space. The air space of the Genesis landfill is larger than the capacity of every other landfill in Sydney combined.

The development of the facility required the relocation of 1.2 million tones of soil, 80,000 metres of concrete and over 1000 tonnes of steel. The recycling plant is a $300 million facility that applies some of the most technologically advanced equipment available. It is the largest of its type in the southern hemisphere. It will recycle over 92% of waste that it receives.The Genesis site does not receive any putrescible waste. It operates for construction waste materials and recycling only. No foodstuffs, sludge, hazardous chemicals or general domestic waste will be received or processed at the facility and the odours and community impact normally associated with tips will not be present at the site at all.

The site has in place effective noise and dust reduction amenities. This includes 10 metre banks around the perimeter of the quarry, high beams surrounding the facility to absorb noise and create a visual barrier, landscaped corridors and an automated watering system to eliminate excess dust. All pavements are sealed and the entire road system is irrigated with a sprinkler system (connected to 7.5 million litres of onsite water storage) to minimise dust.
