Burglaries on the rise in western Melbourne
The western Melbourne suburb of Ardeer has recorded the highest burglary rate in Victoria, with one in 15 homes being burgled in the past 12 months.
RACV’s annual analysis of Victorian crime statistics reveals changing burglary patterns across Victoria, with Melbourne’s western suburbs featuring prominently in this year’s list of most burgled areas. RACV General Manager Home Services, Peter Brindley, said burglary rates at Ardeer have significantly increased compared to one in 42 homes being burgled last year. “Ardeer isn’t the only western suburb to be listed in the top ten. Footscray, Braybrook, Hoppers Crossing and Deer Park are also included,” Mr Brindley said. The rapidly developing northern suburbs of Mernda and Doreen are also listed in the top ten for the third consecutive year.
“The top three suburbs recorded rates of between one in 15 and one in 25 homes. These are significantly higher than last year’s top three most burgled suburbs, which recorded burglary rates of between one in 26 and one in 28. “The good news is that Melbourne’s eastern and south eastern suburbs have seen a decline in burglary rates over the past decade, with rates more akin to those experienced in regional Victoria,” Mr Brindley explained. “The release of these figures should act as a timely reminder for people to take the necessary precautions to ensure that their homes are secure,” Mr Brindley said.
“Installing a burglar alarm and connecting a professional home security monitoring service to an existing or new burglar alarm, is one of the most effective ways to deter thieves. “Another easy way to improve home security and reduce the risk of a burglary is to ensure doors and windows are secured by quality locks which are made to Australian standards. “You should always lock your doors and windows before you leave, even if it is just a quick trip, and ensure your mail is collected and papers are cancelled if you are on holidays. “One more simple measure to deter burglars is to keep your garden well trimmed to remove potential hiding spots for burglars,” Mr Brindley explained.
