Russia and China blocked U.N. resolution on Syria
Russia and China blocked UN Security Council resolution on Syria, by resorting to the veto. Resolution, vetoed by Russia and China, called for sanctions against Syria if the government of this country did not stop the violence in the country within 30 days.
As reported by NYTimes "In explaining why Russia rejected the resolution, Vitaly Churkin, the nation’s ambassador, said, “This approach is against the peaceful solution of the crisis on the basis of a Syrian national dialogue.” He said Russia opposed sanctions against Syria, or any other form of pressure that might increase violence there, particularly because many Syrians do not support the antigovernment movement"
U.S. Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice, accused Russia and China of seeking to continue sales of firearms to Syria and prop up cruel dictators. “During this season of change, the people of the Middle East can now see clearly which nations have chosen to ignore their calls for democracy and instead prop up desperate, cruel dictators,” she said.
Last time Russia and China together have used its veto in the UN Security Council in July 2008, when addressed the issue of imposing sanctions on Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe.
According to human rights organizations, 2,365 civilians have been killed since March this year in massive anti-government demonstrations. People demanded resignation of President Bashar al-Assad and reforms in political system. The country's authorities enforced strict measures, including army troops against the demonstrators. Syrian authorities, on the other hand, claim that so called victims were terrorists, and accuse them of killing 680 army and security officers.
